Whenever I hear the saying "quintessential Pokémon design" or something to that effect Gyarados is always the first thing that comes to my mind.

It's not even my favorite although I certainly like it a lot. But why is this? I don't understand why I think so. What makes Gyarados so excellent?

Probably one of the gen 1 designs that always sticks out to me. It works because it's a monstrous sea serpent and the design reflects what it's supposed to be. I just wish it had more fangs.

It's shape is unique but works very well in battle. You can tell it can whip, wrap or bite at enemies. It is fierce and deadly, fishing one up would be a terrifying experience.
It is the perfect example of a monster at sea. The serpent appearance allows strong maneuverability in the ocean but also in the sky and land.
The colour palette and features contrast well with Magikarp. The weak into powerful motif with Magikarp and Gyarados only makes it seem more treasurable.
Only the best trainers can train one.
