i enjoyed the early game in silver more, after beating the elite four it has a sharp decline in enjoyability
first gen is just all over the place due to how horribly inconsistent everything is, but its kinda fun getting some really busted ass moves at random points
not anywhere near as hard as i remember them, but they were fun

The thing I like about the older gens is that they just leave you alone. There's no handholding, no explicit railroading, barely any lengthy dialogue, no constant interruptions by NPCs every time you enter a new town; they just let you discover things at your own pace. There are certain features that later gens added that make things more convenient but I find myself being able to constantly replay the older games more because they just let you get on with it.

Gold and Silver aren't perfect, there's a lot of issues that Crystal and HGSS fixed. But overall I found it very enjoyable.

This. I remembered the numerous cutscenes from Sun/Moon and it made me extremely grateful how much more freedom the older games give you.

As for VC Gen 2, the Johto region was a lot of fun, but Kanto was much more barren than I remembered. I might've been mixing up memories from HGSS. Still a nice region to explore and I'm glad it's there at all, but it's easy to see just how late in development it was added.

Yep. I was concerned I might not like them after so many years but I enjoyed them immensely. The looks, the sounds, everything was great. They certainly aren't perfect but they're still among my favorites.

It was fun using some pokemon I hadn't before like Hypno, Sudowoodo, Quagsire, and eventually Octillery and Donphan.

Actually, Yes.
Johto is still a great region, all the exploration are great with places like the Union Cave or Tin Tower, soundtrack is amazing, amazing sprites. NPCs aren't interrupting me all the time, but Kanto is a little barebones.
A few complain that I could make, but most of them would be nitpicks. In the end, great games.

Kanto was just the gyms and nothing much else in GSC, you're definitely overlapping the changes HGSS made
