It's not really contrarian to the general fandom though. As much as people on /vp/ talk like the all games are literal rubbish now with no good points at all and the franchise is on the verge of dying, this viewpoint is almost exclusively limited to /vp/.
Or in other words, nobody but /vp/ had a huge problem with XY to start with.

It's a meme, but only because it's an attempt by a dying fanbase at rationalizing the decline of a franchise, which is the true cause of the symptoms.
It was the same with Zelda, any franchise in consistent decline will have its fanbase develop the meme "cycle" concept as they refuss to acknowledge said decline and create memes to arbitrarily argument it's some kind of natural phenomenon.

When a new game comes out and it's disappointing and is hated, then the new game comes out and it's also disappointed and hated, but then the previous game starts looking good by comparison, that's not a "cycle" my dude, it's textbook decline.

Honestly, on other Pokemon sites, XY gets shit-talked all the time. And I have a lot of normie friends IRL who like to shit-talk XY in order to try and fit in.

Though XY does have a lot of great features that were ignored in SM. People were now able to see what they truly lost.

Honestly though, combining XY and SM's strongest features, and adding some post-game, would make for an amazing Pokemon game, in my opinion-a-roonie.

OoT was pretty amazing for the time, a 3D world of that size with that level of interaction was unheard of, it did so many things at once and it was all done better than in any other game at a time where 3D games were clunky and pretty limited.
It was a steep decline after with every game, with BOTW bucking the trend fairly hard and thus exploding in mainstream success outside the delusional, dying 3D Zelda fanbase which is still reeling from the impact.

I think Pokemon only recently entered its dark ages, sadly. We're not even at rock bottom irrelevance yet, but the insane focus on "story" in gen 7 and Ohmori directing ways means we could be close.

It's the latter for me. I've been saying since they came out that X/Y were mostly great games that just needed to fix some of the rough edges and more post-game content.

Even then though, BW still had a strong fanbase. We were even generating memes at an advanced rate. The games were divisive and controversial, but not as much as XY.

It helped that we also had fujos obsessing over N, so a lot of people concentrated their hate on him and his fangirls, and less on the games.

There was a lot of things I really enjoyed about XY like trainer cusotmisation, the new EV system, a good few new pokemon that I actually like and remember, roller-skates are dope, etc etc. The games are riddled with issues though imo but I still prefer XY heavily to SM.

Like I said, car crash vs plane crash. They're both things you want to avoid but at least the car crash likely won't kill you.

XY is the same as every other game at the start of a gen. It lacks the type of polish and post-game that would usually get included in a later iteration. The difference between Gen 6 and all the rest is that there was no Platinum, or Emerald, or Crystal, or B2W2 to improve upon what the original did and all we got was this.

When I went through it after release, I went through with the Exp All and 3 megas on my team, made everything way too easy and I ended up just breezing through the game way too fast and easily. I was also essentially just using upgraded versions of stuff I've already used.
I went through again like a year ago without megas or the Exp All, and decided to catch everything along the way. Playing through it that way made it a lot more fun for me, and it actually felt new since I was using Kalos Pokemon instead. XY is now one of my favorite Pokemon games now as a result.

It was definitely more deserving of a third version SM.
Kalos actually felt like a real region, albeit a flawed one. Alola is just a tourist trap.

I think Sun and Moon suffer from the same issues every other generation suffers from in the beginning and failed to improve all that greatly upon XY. It's still a decent game, but hopefully Ultra Sun and Moon are better.

"praised" is a strong word. I personally just think they are more comfy than SM which were marketed as the most comfy shit ever. I'm mad we didn't get a third version though, what makes XY so lackluster is that it had a lot of potential that was wasted.
