Well it's not like B2W2 where the story is a continuation of BW. USUM is a totally different story and probably only loosely connected to SM if at all. So pick whichever has the pokemon you like

Going from Black to Black 2 got you Reshiram and then Zekrom. Going from Moon to Ultra Moon is going to get you Lunala twice in a row. Non-legendary version exclusives aren't remotely worth deciding for unless you have nobody to trade with. Ultra Beasts probably are, but let's be real here: you like Assembly more than Burst, but are you going to USE Assembly? Ever? Or will you catch it and be done with it? You might not even have anything to use it on if you were planning to, depending on when you catch it. At least with cover legendaries, even if you still don't intend to use them, they're somewhat worth making a decision over because they're plastered all over the box and title screen.

However, getting Ultra Moon and two Lunala means, if you haven't already, you can trade one for a Solgaleo, and get your preferred UB.

What if they pull a BW and have you catch the opposing box legend so that people can buy the same version twice, just like how BW2 swapped for BW? I wouldn't be surprised, and I also wouldn't be surprised if they didn't tell us. I, personally, am going to wait until it's out and see if it matters or not.

It's possible, but you can find that out before buying the games. Even if Gamefreak keeps it a secret for some reason, the game will leak, or you could wait until noon on release day at the latest and find out. It's exceedingly unlikely because of the boxart though I think.

In fact, if the exclusive UBs from the originals stay the same, it might be more beneficial to get the opposite version.
I played moon to begin with, but Dusk Mane Necrozma looks far better than Dawn Wings, so I'll likely be ''''''''''''''''''''buying'''''''''''''''''''' ultra sun
