>>33806710My guess is that they wanted to quit doing third versions since they don't sell as well as new region games and just do a new gen every couple years with 70~ new Pokemon instead. According to Masuda (or maybe Oomori, can't remember), Nintendo got mad when he said they were going to make Gray Version instead of a new gen on 3DS and he had to convince them to let him do B2W2 (because it's totally not a third version if it has a 2 in the title) while he worked on XY.
We're only getting getting USUM because GF needs a buffer to give them more time to work on the Switch game, just like they needed a Gray/B2W2 to give them time to finish all those 3DS models. I would guess that, since the gen after next will also be on Switch, whatever the next games are won't get a third version either. It'll go Gen 8 > DP remakes > Gen 9
