He had no contact with people his age until he was like 16, he didn't receive enough social interaction to develop proper mental and emotional capacities on par with those of 'normal' people. Look up feral children, there's some pretty interesting (but also pretty morbid) stuff about how isolation and lack of human contact in a child's early years can impact how our brains develop and how we perceive reality in general.
