I mean, take the Gen V and VI starters. They have a coherent that than can be more or less easily seen (more in the case of VI than V, arguably). No one would argue against the fact that gen VI starters are based on roleplaying classes. Because they made it clear that it's so. Same can go, for an extent, to Gen V starters.
With legendaries, it's also always more or less easy to see what they're all about (at least from gen III onwards). You give them a few looks and if you know what they're baed on, you can recognize and it's pretty hard to counter argument since the similarities are just so many.
So, what gets me with the zodiac theory (which is the only one of the 'starter pattern' theories even worth discussing) is why they'd be so open with it when everywhere else they're not?
