The game itself was a bit forgettable and mediocre but it alone never really got a bunch of hate. People only started shitting on Gen 6 as whole because of ORAS, which got shit for being rushed, having even more handholding and not including content from a game released over a decade ago.
SM was the first time I have ever seen people complain about the railroading this much not only on this board, but on other sites and forums as well. You're delusional if you think this isn't the absolute worst case of railroading in this series
