am i playing this right?

i just installed this and an emulator on a psp i had lying around
i just beat the 3rd gym but my character doesnt seem so strong, i have a wartortle and it seems really hard playing since i keep getting killed by wild pokemen.

Have a variety in types. A ground type will steamroll Vermillion gym or a grass. The experience dropped is balanced so that lower levelled pokemon that gain exp against hgher levelled will level up faster. The game does take some grinding, so if you catch something that is too weak to fight on it's own, put it first in your party, get into a battle, then first chance you get switch to something that can take care of the problem Pokemon. If you sill struggle later on, Zapdos and Articuno will be available to catch after the fifth badge, but beware, they are level 50 and you will need to stock up on ultra balls. SAVE FREQUENTLY.

Adding to what he said, when picking Pokémon look up their resistances (if you didn't memorized the type chart yet) so you can have a "counter" that can at least resist certain types, like say you have two water types, you will want a ground or poison type to counter electric or grass Pokémon (in this case one of the nidos would be good)
