There technically are longer books, but they're all just shitty world record bait that only qualify as literature on a technicality. The record is technically held by a book with 700 words in the title and has something like 16 million words, but the majority of the book is incoherent gibberish that was randomly generated. Another is an entire book consisting of "The blah went to the blah to blah about blah and blah." for millions of words.

Subspace Emissary is the longest "real" story.

This is actually a Smash Bros fanfic. He was interviewed about it and claimed he started writing it to help him learn English. I took a look at the latest chapter and it was surprisingly bad grammatically for someone who wrote so much.

But it's true. Sure, you also have to process a lot of other people's work to learn a lot of different techniques/methods, but in the end it's only when you actually do it that you start to think about why you're doing it the way you are, and start finding ways to improve yourself.
