Was the darker colour palette one of the reasons why Gen 5 dex wasn't that well recieved? Would it have had a better reception had it been more bright/colourful?

Increasing the saturation doesn't help -- you need to actually use a lighter pallet. But yes, I can see it. That's one reason why initially didn't like the Sinnoh dex -- too many dark blues and purples.

Nah, most of Unova's Pokemon are poorly designed.

And as much as some faggots like >>33838891 insist that there was no Kanto pandering, instead BW was Kanto-lite. Tons of the new Pokemon are just mirrors for Kanto's.

If anything, they're a bit too lurid. Especially the shinies, they have that displeasing neon look. But anything is better than gen VI's washed out oversaturated coloration.

I think the slightly more cartoonish, westernised look a lot of them have in terms of overall design works well, but the jittery, limited animations and upscaled backsprites kill it for me. Also unpopular opinion here but I like how a lot of them "mirror" gen I mon

do you remember swanna? drilbur? klang? Unfezant? Swoobat? Basculin? maractus?
Nearly every single mon were forgettable with Bland movesets.

And a good chunk of those mons are also blatant copies/rehashes of older mons. Kling is magnemite. drilbur is diglett. trubbish line is Grimer. swanna is pelliper. The mushrooms are Vileplume.

They had always stuck their foot over this line before on occasion but this was the first generation they just jumped completely away from "exploring nature to collect and train animals" and started designing pokemon around literally anything they felt like including gothic fashion and ice cream. It stopped being a game about exploring a natural world that felt real and started being a bunch of video game randomness. They had a lot of good animal designs but it's easier to ruin immersion than to add to it.

The huge backlash was from people who liked the former aesthetic and the defenders are people who were too young to be attached to previous worldbuilding and just saw pokemon as an anything goes digimon style world.

Think about it. People hate Gen 1 pandering because it's just GF shilling Gen 1 Pokémon. Gen V was meant to be a genesis of sorts for the series (closest we'll EVER get to a reboot I promise you that) and simply made callbacks to Gen 1 without being Gen 1 pandering.

This isn't exclusive to Gen 5 but Gen 5 does it the most, by far.

Also some of those aren't really accurate, there's a difference between Pokemon being similar and Pokemon being analogous with each other. Seviper isn't analogous with Arbok just because it's a snake. If it also had a pre-evo, then maybe. Same for the Ralts line, just because they're three Psychic types doesn't mean they're analogs of the Abra line. If Gardevoir evolved by trading, maybe. If the Ralts line was analogous to the Abra line then the Solosis and Gothita lines would be too.

And I left out the obvious ones that all Gens do like the early bugs/birds/rodents and the pseudos.
