Ultra Beasts were a great opportunity to make cool looking pokemon that did not obey natural laws, and also get a few neat type combos out the door. They only did this with Nihelgeo and Celesteela, and to a lesser extent Xurkitree (Still should have been Electric/Grass). Everything else was just a normal pokemon.
Assembly seems like an interesting addition design-wise as well.
Their setup I also adore, but feel like it was poorly handled as well. The idea of creatures from other worlds coming over to ours was fun shit. However, instead of integrating them in any meaningful way, there are just here now.
They straddle an uncomfortable position design-wise. Between the outlandish, like Celesteela, and the overdesigned (in a good way) like Guzzlord, there are a few that, as previously stated, just look like ordinary Pokemon. If you had plopped Pheromosa down 5th gen and not said anything, I wouldn't have batted an eye at anything but its stats. Even Kartana and Nihelgeo look perfectly ordinary.
