Yes, (J)RPGs are supposed to be narrative driven, but Pokemon is first and foremost a monster catching game. It's abundantly clear that Game Freak did not learn from SM's biggest flaws but are in fact doubling down on them, those of which being the cutscenes and linearity. I don't know why, but gen 7 is trying SO hard to be like an interactive version of the anime, and it's killing the heart of the series.
