The point of Max was useless aside from having a reason as to why May's parents would be fine with their daughter running off with the first boy she meets, and being a cock block for Ash. Not to mention his contribution was that he knew about pokemon, except he didn't know shit and Ash has a pokedex. He became more worthless when Brock came back.
