It's actually an interesting comparison - between Dark Souls and Pokémon, I mean - because I enjoy the two for similar reasons.
I like to plan out my teams and retry different areas with different mons and just progress through the game and that's that.
In Dark Souls, I like to think up unique (often God-awful) builds to challenge myself to play through, even if it's not that tough.
Both also have somewhat similar mechanics if you think of them in a derived way; Pokémon Centers are somewhat similar to Bonfires in how they work, and while obviously Pokémon is much easier, they both encourage learning routes and paths, even if it's much less important in Pokémon, especially as of late.
Not to mention the plethora of self-imposed challenges in both series; nuzlocke, no bonfire, monotype, [weapon]-only runs, etc.
It's a very neat comparison and kind of makes me want a Pokémon soulslike and a Dark Souls monster-catching jrpg.
