You own the Pokedex, but you don't own the Rotom. You're just borrowing the Rotom, and if the Battle Factory is anything to go by, borrowing doesn't count as owning, as far as the Pokedex is concerned.

Does talking to a Pokemon outside of battle register a mon as seen in S/M? I don't actually know.

Assuming that only seeing them in battle counts, then that still makes sense. But otherwise, I concede, my headcanon bullshit can't fix everything.

There were instances in DPP to get some Pokemon seen by looking at books or something IIRC. Conversely, Ultra Beasts can never be registered as only seen and must be captured.
