They're not. The praise they get is because they were actually innovative back then, they're the very reason why this board exists. Later Pokemon games are better mechanically, but they are merely riding off the success of gen 1 rather than substantially adding to the series and making it fresh.

Gen 1 was basically a proof of concept/alpha, it took until Gen 3 for the game to actually be somewhat finished.

It's overrated and mostly a bad game but people still prefer it over the recent ones because people didn't like the series going into lolis, furries, waifus, and animu-characters route to sell.

Not as much as now. There was no waifu mon unless you consider Jynx one.
No pretty animu characters like in Gen4~7
No lolis like in Gen5~Gen7

They're not overrated. They're that good. At the time it was the only game with multiplayer with so many usable characters and the amount of Pokemon to catch led to tons and tons of replay value. They also had a better sense of exploration than most of the current games.
