I'd bet on Gen 1 remakes. We still haven't gotten a full version of Kanto with the physical/special split, and Gen 1 remakes would lure in the purists who don't think they can play Pokemon on anything other than a Game Boy. If they are Gen 1 remakes they might not be remakes but new games that take place in Kanto, and will probably be packed with all kinds of fanservice, not just the usual Gen 1 pandering.

Once they have an idea of how much of a fanbase they've got on the Switch they'll decide what to do next.

Not really. They could just tie saves to user accounts.

They could just circumvent the versions angle by either

a) selling the game at a lower price than usual Switch games (not likely)

b) sell one game, but you choose the path (i.e. Diamond path or Pearl path)

I think a price hike per game might change some minds for some people.
The average Console game is about $60. Average 3DS game is about $40. You're dumping an extra $40 into a second game if they continue with dual games.
Not saying they WON'T do it, but it would be an absolute shitshow if they did.
