Characters are woefully underdeveloped. Most important enemy teams are lacking from a thematic or climatic viewpoint. Most battle themes are completely forgettable. Little optional areas to visit.

I'd actually say the plot itself is underrated.

Rushed pacing. After the 3rd Gym, they just stopped caring and it was mad dash to the credits at that point.
Way too many Pokemon in the regional dex to a point where you wouldn't even see some Pokemon in a playthrough unless you went completely out of your way.

Battle Chateau. You know, that one castle-y place on the river on Route 6 or 7. If you battle enough in there, your title ranks up and eventually gym leaders, E4 members, and Diantha will show up.
I always used it for grinding money and experience because the Furisode Girls there have all Audino teams.
It's really the feature I miss most from XY specifically.

HGSS version of rematches sucked, all of the time-based nonsense you had to go through just to unlock them was the opposite of convenient. It was better than Emerald's system, but Platinum is still the only game that did gym leader rematches well.

It went WAAAAY too hard on the hand-holding. Like, just stop to think about how generous and piss-easy it is. 2 batches of starters, heavily buffed EXP share, free Lapras and Mega Lucario just right in the middle of the game, the champion is like the only person with a full team, etc.

XY weren't bad, but underwhelming. The what thing was the lack of features that made B2W2, and even Gen 4, enjoyable in the long-term. Kalos was a good region (better than Unova, imo) but felt empty in comparison.

Having a barebones yet functional customization as a feature. People complained that it was lacking compared to other games when XY was the most recent title, but SM's replacement is so much worse that it makes Kalos customs look fantastic.

But I think they botched the jump to 3D and the games look pretty ugly as a result. I'm not just referring to the Pokemon models themselves, but the whole overworld. It's also an issue with ORAS, but with regards to that, while I know most of the problem there was being too faithful to the old tilesets because they didn't have a lot of development time, even the few little touches they added that were supposed to stand out looked really bad. Like the route 2 or whatever scene where you look through the trees at a skybox two feet in front of your face.

Anyway, I'll accept not having enough time for ORAS, but with X and Y, it being their first crack at it is a weak excuse when they had almost two decades to learn 3D. This isn't the N64, it isn't new. It isn't even just the 3DS, because gen 7 looks a lot nicer and actually looks like it was designed with working around the hardware in mind. Just in terms of graphics though, not performance.

Low selection of new mons.
Odd pacing at the beginning
Washed out colors on classic pokes
Lucario pandering (have a whole tower, a free one, and your first mega evolution)
No megas for the starters (but thank god the Kanto mons got them to overshadow the Kalos ones, especially two forms for Charizard)
I’m all for knocking down dragons a peg but Fairy type was such a lame new one after getting Steel and Dark four gens earlier
Regional dex is split into three areas, for what reason? Made the map and geometry seem more disjointed
Limited male clothing and hair choices compared to female options
Lumiose City wins the worst navigation award
Route 1’s emptiness made a horrible first impression

The enemy pokemon AI and movesets are actually so bad that you can win the E4 just spamming tackle because the opponent decided to use a status move while you're already status'ed. The flaws from XY carry over into ORAS, and it really shows when you compare ORAS to gen 3 RSE.

They improved the battle pauses and a move animation or two for ORAS, but yes Gen VI was all laggy garbage. They didn't even include stereoscopic 3D battles this time, they're just that bad at this.

For in-game legends, it started in Black/White with Reshiram and Zekrom. The reason for them doing it I imagine is because the Pokemon are featured in cutscenes, and it would be less of a headache to just keep them from being shiny than to include extra programming that somehow checks if the Pokemon would be shiny before a battle. This is especially true in Black/White and BW2, where the cutscenes utilize models used nowhere else. There's also the fact that the Pokemon's overworld sprites would need palette swaps for if they were shiny.
