Actually Gengar's perfect attendance record in OU was broken at the start of SM.

regardless of that: Ghost is a broken typing; Gengar has good stats and has always had a good movepool that has only gotten better with each passing gen; stallbreaks nicely; Fairy types made Poison good.

Excellent stats and movepool. Good typing. Unfortunately, lost its Ground immunity, but being immune to fighting coverage and having a 4x resist to poison moves along with U-turn is pretty nice.

Cursed Body does have a niche in stopping Choiced sweepers, but losing Levitate really hurt it.
