Why isn't torchic a "totally for girls" pokemon?It's all relative I suppose, but Torchic is more sensibly proportioned, it's basically an orange, cartoon chicken. Literally my farmer grandpa's chicken, if you will.
If you dig deep enough you can try to support an argument that avian creatures have inherent connection to femininity, but there's a clear line to something like Torchic with it's beady eyes, talons, solid beak and generally simplistic color scheme that can work for all genders versus the big-headed Penguin with floppy sandal feet, huge eyes, smiling beak and all around cutesy demeanor. Both the anime and merchandising ultimately speaks for itself.
It's not a gigantic gap mind you, and in my later years I've warmed up to Piplup being more than that when compared to later generations, but I can totally see some slight demographic testing at play.
