Trading a Lickitung for a Dugtrio seemed like a really bad idea to me as a kid since Lickitung was, as far as I knew, a one-time trade-only Pokémon, whereas I could catch a Dugtrio in about 10 minutes if I went looking for one.
Even though I now know that you can catch wild Lickitung in Cerulean Cave in Yellow, it still seems a bit weird to me - you're basically trading a Pokémon that you can only catch after beating the game for one that you can potentially get before the third gym leader.

I really love in-game trades, they provide some memorable moments and some neat Pokémon.
My favourite moments in particular are pic related and >>33879530, they both crack me up (although as a kid I genuinely regretted trading my Raichu thinking I could have evolved it)
The trades that I've personally used and loved are MARCEL, SPOT, MAKIT, Charap, Gaspar and Billy.

I actually really like getting nicknamed Pokémon, I know it's autistic but I feel like it gives them personality and the fact that you can't change them gives them memorability and shared experience.
Like sure, everyone has probably used a Machop at some time in their Pokemon career, but all under different circumstances. A subset of players all used MUSCLE the Machop.

Gen I is probably the only gen that does in-game trades right, providing you with rare Pokémon (four of which could only be obtained by trade)

I know Wonder Trade/GTS has pretty much removed this need, but it'd be cool if they let you get the first stages of traditionally late game Pokemon really early.
Like imagine if someone in Hau'oli City offered to trade a Jangmo-o for your Pikachu - there's still a bit of work to obtain it, but it lets you have Jangmo-o right away.
Or give you non-Alolan forms. I was so disappointed that the Haunter for Graveler trade wasn't a surprise Kanto Graveler.
Or Pokémon not even in the regional dex! There are over 800 Pokémon and trainers are routinely saying that they've been to or are from somewhere else. I'd train the fuck out of a Glameow in Alola

This shit is ultimate buttfuckery. You think your shitty trades are good? Thing thing punches enemies in 3 ways and it's good at it. After evolving, it oneshots basically 80% of Orre's population. And it can learn Light Screen if you your team needs it. And occasional Static helps greatly when catching Shadow Pokemon.

Did I mention that the trade takes like 10 seconds so it can be easily reseted for great IVs?

Mr. Mime for Abra before 3rd/4th badge. Rare Farfetch'd, Jynx and Lickitung. Ability to have level 3 Electrode. Man, first generation has amazing trades, indeed.

On the other hand, generation 3 in-game trades are absolute garbage. You get Pokemon with 0-5 IVs and almost all of them are either common (Makuhita, Skitty, Seedot, Plusle) or underwhelming (fucking Corsola or Horsea in Pacifidlog).

Nigga, Makuhita is available in Granite Cave with 50% chance to appear. It's less than an hour from Rustboro. No one is going to take that trade while knowing that fact.

Jynx appears in Seafoam Islands in the Japanese version of Blue (as well as all versions of HGSS), so it's technically a Kanto mon.
Japanese Blue is pretty weird. Ditto appears in the Rock Tunnel, Clefairy and Rapidash live in Cerulean Cave, Lickitung is a Safari Zone encounter and Kangaskhan and Tauros are only available from in-game trades.

Blue is the third version.
Western Red and Blue are literally Red and Green featuring the changes introduced in Japanese Blue.
Yellow is more of an anime tie-in special version.

Playing the OG Blue is a different experience that most people will never have.

It was supposedly a minor revision to Red and Green that fixed a few bugs and changed some wild encounters here and there. Bulbapedo tells me it was released in October 1996 exclusively to CoroCoro subscribers and wasn't made available for general retail until October 1999, a month before Gold and Silver came out. Very weird.
And yeah, I highly doubt anyone on this site has ever played it. It's the blandest third version of all and there's basically no reason to play it even if you can read Japanese.

Generation introduced in doesn't always = region they're native or thrive in, but it's semantics and pretty autistic to make the distinction.
Like, nobody calls Eevee a Kalos Pokémon just because that's the first region it has been found in the wild (Trophy Garden and Castelia Park being special cases)
