I want to get into the Mystery Dungeon games but I'm not sure where to start but pic related caught my attention.
Is this like the Crystal to Explorers of Time and Darkness as in, the complete version but essentially the same game?

The default ui of this game is generic and half assed. Once you can control your character, quickly go to settings and adjust the layout etc. After that the game can be pretty fun and captiviting inbits own way.

Start by the first one, Pokemon mystery dungeon blue rescue team for the nintendo DS there's also red rescue team but it's the GBA version, no major differences
The story in this game is pretty light, and you will be able to get a good taste of the gameplay, it has some difficulty spikes on some bosses but as long as you save a few reviver seeds you should be mostly fine, also it's kinda short, so you will get a good warm up and then decide if you wanna try the other games in the series.

The first mystery dungeon games. They were Red/Blue rescue team and are arguably just okay.

Not a big surprise, most PMD ''fans'' have only played Explorers because that's what they heard everyone talking about, and how good it is, so they only play that until they're done with the game, and then they play Super next, because that's what other ''fans'' tells them.

I remember playing Explorers of Darkness. I ran into some horrible difficulty spike that I couldn't overcome, so I quit in frustration. That was maybe 4-6 years ago. Maybe I should give it another go.

I'm playing Super and I am wondering, what are the best looplets to wear? I know about the treasures and am currently working on collecting all of them, but I don't know which are actually good. I want to complete my gold treasures before I start the never hungries.

Yeah that's a good place to begin. There's also Red & Blue rescue team and Red you can emulate pretty easy on a phone or computer with a GBA emulator. Don't even bother playing Gates to Infinity

I guess as a first game, it's not a great intro to the PMD series. It's lacking compared to the other games. For example there's no hunger, there's no quiz at the beginning, not a lot pokemon diversity, among other small things but as a game itself it isn't too bad. I'd save them for last though if you're playing through all the PMD games.

you're saying that like it's a bad thing
though i could see someone not liking it as it's first pmd game because of the terrible slow text speed, so yeah, i wouldn't recommend it as a first game, though i would play it before playing PSMD, for playing gates after super would feel really awkward since you wouldn't have all of those QoL improvements like being able to push other pokemon, swap places, freely swap leader and what not

Gates is a good game if you're into the stories of the games and it has the best partner in the series. Unfortunately the forced slow text speed alone brings it down a lot.

Yes, I've had mine wear the excavation looplet for that reason. It's the only real way to get sitrus berries, as you can't purchase any vitamins guaranteed to boost HP. I have quite a few vitamins thanks to it. Joy seeds as well, though I don't really use them. I still regret losing a zinc due to an enemy finding it on the same turn I found the stairs and hastily advanced.

What about the looplet that works as a tight belt? I remember never taking it off when I first found one in Explorers.
