It felt like such a waste for GameFreak to create Ash-Greninja only for it to not lead up to anything important. I legitimately thought that Ash-Greninja was foreshadowing a new mechanic in SM where there would be more Trainer/Pokemon fusions. Do you think we'll ever get another Pokemon like it again?

I know you're being facetious but dog's entire gimmick is time of day evolutions, it was built from the ground up around it and is intrinsic to its line. A trainer fusion has absolutely fucking nothing to do with a ninja frog. It was tacked on and would only make sense if it was a general mechanic available to all sorts of Pokemon.

Dusk was already a time of day in the games, they just made a new dog form for it. Again, merges are thematically consistent with the tao trio, just like time based forms with the dog. Battle bond has nothing to do with Greninja specifically, it was presented like a mechanic but implemented as a retarded ability that makes even less sense than it did in the show.

GameFreak didn't make Ash-Greninja. The anime did. It was Ash's replacement for a Mega. Why the writers didn't give him one instead of a BB Greninja, I have no clue. Maybe because he only ever catches new gen Pokemon, and by bringing back an old Pokemon and making them the star by mega evolving would just seem awkward.

I'm happy they didn't create a trend with it. I actually already completely forgot Ash-Greninja is in the games. They added him past his relevance and hopefully won't be transferable to Gen 8. Ash Pikachu I'm fine with, and likely will be transferable due to his Z Crystal.

I think you really need to have watched the anime to appreciate Ash-Greninja, but I do agree that they should've introduced some kind of mechanic. Trainer fusions doesn't sound great to me, but just the concept of the Battle Bond ability is much better. The way I thought it would work prior to SM release was that the three starters, the other XY starters and maybe a few special Pokemon would all gain the hidden ability Battle Bond and it would be a kind of alternative to Mega Evolution.

It never made any sense. Their on-screen dynamic wasn't any stronger than his other mons. They just suddenly announced one episode that they have a special bond in an especially glaring display of "tell, don't show." Then he kept losing to BURASTO because he couldn't control his power, then he gained control of it and lost anyway exactly like he did in their first fight. Nothing was properly explained, nothing made sense and nothing was accomplished. Even the "prophecy" tied to his dumb form didn't come true. This was probably the worst thing the anime ever did. Worse than GS Ball.

And that isn't really true as far as we've seen anyway. The games still move according to the specific time of day and have different lighting for each one respectively. In interviews, the only thing that has been stated is that the carrot wolf only exists because USUM's theme is "the in-between" of the day and the night, aka the sunset/dusk/twilight period. Necrozma is also the supposed inbetween of Lion/Bat and carrot wolf is the inbetween of daywolf and nightwolf. No mention of maps or anything special

Yeah, if they would make it like with Espeon and Umbreon where you actually have a choice. In this case you never had a choice since you're stuck with the evolution that your version gave you. Same stupid reason why they don't just have Cosmoem evolve depending on the time of day and not on the version.

"Yajima wanted to make the bond between Satoshi and Gekkouga a major part of the story, but felt it would be difficult to do so if it had to remain a Gekkouga, so he went to Game Freak, and they came up with the idea of a synchro transformation. It was put in Sun/Moon afterwards, but was created during this discussion between anime staff and GF."

Kinda sad that Battle Bond just doesn't work like a regular mega, click "mega evo" and you're good to go, but no game freak had to make it more gimmicky. The anime depicted it as a straight mega evo, but at the same time it being its "own thing" which game freak easily could had implemented.
