>>33891818 I think you can say that a lot of this mood has something to do with the graphical limitations of the Gameboy Colour. Older games with crappy graphics leave a lot more for you to fill in, and so the world isn't nearly as full-realized as it is in more graphically advanced games -- this creates a sort of inherent mysteriousness to these worlds, especially when it's paired with obscure lore.
