This. It's a freaking fern leaf or something. To represent nature, hence Earth. Doesn't really evoke Ground-type badge but it works during the Gen 1 era.

But I'm wondering about Gio's team.
Hopefully, he has two teams - one for the villain battle (more villain-like, possibly with Persian as one of the mons [foreshadowed by Masuda's photo]) and another one for the Battle Tree/Facility (based around Groundmons, more similar to his Gym Leader team).

I hope that his Mega is Kangaskhan (in the "villain" team at least).
