At least for HGSS, ORAS and DPP, they could give the characters their personalities when they were rivals. Or bring them as the rivals from their games instead of the MC versions.

There's no chance that any previous protagonists will ever show up in a current games.

The only exception is Red. And even with Red, they gave him all starters + Pikachu, so you're not even sure which Pokemon is his canon starter.

Not even. Blue doesn't even have an Eeveelution anymore. Or any of the other Pokemon he only used in Yellow. So you can't even say Yellow is canon.

GameFreak is really autistic about confirming anything canon in-game.

If Yellow was canon, Blue should at least be using an Eeveelution. But GameFreak has gone out of their way to exclude any Pokemon he had in Yellow in future games.

The events in every game are canon. But the specifics, such as which version, male or female trainer, name, starter, etc will never be made canon. The only real exception is Red.
