Should I skip Black and White 1 and jump to this? I've heard it hailed as the second coming of Christ in Pokemon form. I got bored with Black years ago after the first couple gyms and dropped it. Will I miss out on anything?

BW makes BW2 far better but is not a necessity. They work well together but are also fine as standalones.

Keep going on with BW and then play BW2. There's a feature that unlocks some extra stuff if you link both games.

The only reason to ever bother with BW1 is if you want N's Pokemon and optional textdumps, only the former being worthwhile.
BW2 has everything BW1 has and more; BW1 is linear, easy, and has shit postgame too.

Oh I forgot to mention you should play until the very end. Not gonna spoil it for you, but if there's one thing is that when it happened it literally blew my head. If anything I can qualify it as one of the best endings in the whole series if not the best.

BW2 was good when it was the most up to date version, but you probably won't get as much out of it today. The most notable feature at the time, the Pokemon variety, has since become a standard thing. Plus, people tend not to spend as much time on the side content when they're playing older games as they do when the games are fresh.

The game works by itself but there are certainly some plot points that you'll miss if you didn't finish BW, not in the sense that you won't know what's going on, but just that it throws some references to the first games that if you didn't play them may seem a bit random. It just depends how much you really care about the background of the story. I played BW2 before I played BW and don't feel like I missed out on anything big.

It's not the plot that's the problem, so much as the region itself. Unova was built around having a limited Pokedex. Having all these new Pokemon is nice for your second run through the region, but it kind of waters down what made gen 5 unique in the first place. I don't think BW2 should ever be played before BW.
