Is the shininess of a Pokemon predetermined when you receive an egg in gen 2, or are you able to soft reset until it hatches shiny?

Shininess is determined by specific IVs in Gen 2, and I'm pretty sure IVs are calculated when you receive the egg as that part of breeding has not changed over the years.

Gotcha, so in gen 2 the best I can do is save right before receiving the egg from the old man. I didn't start breeding until gen 3 so I didn't know if things were different in the games it was introduced in.
