I'm really not. In relation to the gameplay. Like you said, both start with a half hour of cutscene. Cyber Slueth then stops with them (Bar maybe two dialogue boxes every case) except at the end of chapters. SM doesn't stop them every 10 minutes until long after the Aether Foundation

I would like to add that most of the Digimon Story series, to my knowledge, had this kind of gameplay. It's really enjoyable, especially Digimon World (retarded translation) Dusk/Dawn on the DS.

Actually this, Digimon Story games tend to be a lot closer to Pokémons style than Digimon World games. No fucking clue why Dusk/Dawn is called World when it's in the Story franchise.
I mention Cyber Slueth because the weird type/affinity matchup system is much cooler and closer to Pokémon than older systems. I never did wrap my head around the lanes/battlefield as a kid.

I honestly started skipping the story segments at some parts, until I just skipped the entire thing all together. I never got the hype for Cyber Sleuth. It was fun, but holy shit, it's a B-Grade game.

Digimon has a track record of being either mediocre or just plain hard to play. Cyber Slueth was a nice change as it felt like a Pokémon/Final Fantasy style RPG with the monster collecting from the former and the insanely unfair bullshit boss fights you need to spend far too long prepping for from the latter.

I genuinely made this thread hoping to compare it to the current state of Pokémon but we got salty twats and Digimon fans instead, probably predictably.

I think I honestly like some of the bad Digimon games more than Cyber Sleuth. It definitely feels more polished than average for a Digimon game, but it feels like that polish comes at the cost of making the game completely bland and boring. I'd have liked to see Nokia and Arata (not the mute main character, though) in an anime series instead of this game. They were pretty much the only reason I kept playing.

As for how it compares to the current state of Pokemon: very, very poorly. I know that it's sort of a /vp/ tradition to hate the current gen of pokemon and make a huge deal out of every single flaw, but come on.

I have no hate for current Pokémon, I just think it's the least outlandish it's ever been to compare it to Digimon, and considering that doing so has always been a bit of a meme that's quite interesting. I do agree Cyber Slueth is maybe over-polished, but it was basically a push to see if it really still had a western market. Seemingly successfully.

I vastly prefer the combat system and the grind, but I have no real nostalgia for those particular entries. As >>33924636 said, it is a bit over-polished, but I don't think that's a bad thing.
The translation isn't flawless either, but never interferes with the story.
Totally worth picking up cheap, since the sequel is out early 2018.

It's definitely better than Data Squad. As for Dawn/Dusk, it's got a far better story for sure and the core mechanics are basically the same. They just removed formations and that thing you could do where you could max out the stats on any digimon regardless of level and replaced it with a much less rewarding system where degeneration gets you a pittance in bonus stat points that can be increased in the farm. So the game is less broken, but in my opinion it feels less fun because of it, since breaking the game was the only fun thing about the gameplay in Dawn/Dusk to begin with.

I don't mean that it's overpolished in that polish is a bad thing. Polish is good on a good game. The problem is that this isn't really a good game. It's just kind of really safe and boring. So when you polish it, there's nothing left. It's just flat. It's like, this game is right on the point where it's not good enough to be enjoyable for its merits but not bad enough to be entertaining. It's just really bland in terms of gameplay.

Neither franchise has ever been hard. Most of the time people complain about DW2, it's for the roguelike elements. And it's not even remotely hard by roguelike standards because combat is so easy and you can escape whenever you want. Even fuel stops being an issue before long. And most of the times someone says that Gen 1 or 2 in Pokemon were harder than modern gens, it's because they're nostalgiafags who haven't played those games in over a decade. If anything, the first two gens were the easiest. Both series are made for children.

It's still not hard. Items really break the game because of how they're used independently from every other action. Any fully-evolved digimon can get through the whole game if you just stock up on healing items. Even the Monzaemon costume, which is very easy to get.

It's not. I beat it with 6 DNA evolutions on my main digimon and 3 or 4 on the other two. The increase in stats from DNA evolution gets so small later on that all you really need is some good moves and then you can just stop bothering with that entirely as soon as you get a mega. Halfway through the game, I just went from dungeon to dungeon without ever stopping to level up or evolve.
