I get that it's still arguably a step up from how the series had been until then, but the way Black and White handled gym leaders being "important" was like bad shonen. Like these are the eight chosen defenders of unova scattered across the land with mystical techniques. I would almost prefer nothing, especially when their lauded 'story involvement' constantly forces me to stop what I'm doing to deal with some idiotic problem.
The Elite Four, if anyone, seem a lot more like they'd be doing civil servant shit like battling terrorism, and out of everyone in the game, the four final bosses of the game are the ones I'd like to actually get some build up, not the stepping stone fuckheads.
