As for how my favourites shifted over the years, I honestly cannot remember anything about my first Crystal save file except that I picked Cyndaquil. I started a new save file pretty soon since it was the hip thing to do among my friends back then, and fell in love with Meganium, Pidgeot, Umbreon, Raikou and Suicune. Aside from those I don't really remember jack shit and that save file died with the battery ages ago.
In the gen3 prerelease days I was aaaall about Treecko. When I got Sapphire, I still was, and I ended up beating the game with a team of four Pokemon; Sceptile, Pelipper, Ninetales and Kyogre. I also fell in love with Absol at some point when I found it in the wild. Also Latias.
I don't recall liking any of the gen4 newcomers all that much around release, but I still enjoyed Empoleon, Staraptor, Roserade and Uxie. I did later come around to think of Bronzong and Porygon-Z as the real highlights, but gen4 is still the low point in designs for me. By contrast, I loved just about everything about gen5 and that's when my list of favourites really fucking blew up and took its current form.
