100-ish is Gamefreak's go-to number for a new generation, unless they're intentionally trying to do a soft reboot like gen 3 and 5. However, that 100 has included Mega Evolutions and Alola forms in the last few gens, so the total number of Pokedex additions were significantly smaller.

We will probably get around the same amount of pokemon as 6th gen. But maybe the pokemon will have less evolutions like 7th gen had.

SM had 81 and 18 Alolan forms, putting the total at 99. XY had 72 and 29 Mega Evolutions, putting the total at 101. That lines up pretty closely with Gen 4's 107 Pokemon and Gen 2's 100 Pokemon. I think Gamefreak counted those as new Pokemon, but didn't count alternate forms belonging to other gimmicks.

They had better give us more than 41 or 78 new Pokemon (new species, forms don't count). The last two gens have had appallingly small amounts of new Pokemon it was really disappointing.

Rotom and its forms were introduced in the same generation. Later forms meant forms introduced in a generation afterwards.

Ftfy. 100 is an easily feasible number for GF. You act as if XY proved that they're doing smaller dex counts now, when the only reason why that happened was that they were transitioning to the 3DS. At least with the Switch, they'll already have their assets/models available. Its also not like the Switch game literally just began development a few months ago.

I personally think the big thing that merits the Alolan Forms being counted as separate entities is that they follow the standard rules of a stand-alone Pokemon (can't change back into its base form), but were introduced in a different gen than their base form. If they had slapped a different name and Pokedex number on them, nobody would have questioned their status as new Pokemon.

Also 1 of those Megas was for a Pokemon introduced in the same generation oops. Different set of games though.

Gen 8 should have at least 80 new mons, because the pokemon #888 needs to be part of Gen 8.
Each Gen having one mon with trips in their dex numbers is a cute pattern and I don't want GF to break it.

That pattern will probably break in Gen IX. Gamefreak supposedly doesn't want to reach 1000 Pokemon so soon. So I'd expect 1000 to be reached by either gen 10 or 11.
