Not anymore. Even then it's 2019.

It took 2 years to make sm. Nintendo is the one to force them making them faster. 2015 was the only year in recent times to have no new game.

The in battle pokemon models are already way too high quality for the 3DS to be handling, all they have to do is give them new textures. And any overworld characters they make are 98% going to be new ones, with only a few exceptions if they go as far as SM did with old characters, which might not happen. Overworld models for Pokemon will just be their battle models cause the Switch can handle it.

There's gap every 2-4 years(2011, 2007, 2005, 2003, 2001, 1997) and with the exception of BW2 there's always a year gap when moving to a new system

Y'know when they say this, I don't think they mean "Don't get your expectations too high for a Pokemon game", I think they mean "Don't get your expectations too high for a Switch game"
Casuals think that Nintendo makes Pokemon and that Switch Pokemon would be Breath of the Wild or Mario Odyssey tier.

See, they confirmed there was a vastly bigger team working on PS, by virtue of saying how small the USM team is. I'm sure the concept artists would have started working on Gen VIII after finishing up their work on Gen VII (I could be wrong tho, which would put it out of whack) so that by the time the main team had finished with S/M, they could start into Gen VIII after taking holidays/project break/time off/whatever, leaving around a 2-2 1/2 year turnaround time (done before) to get the game out. The fact Nintendo is saying 2018 instead of 2019 or later, seems to me like they're further along in development than some think, because after the WiiU debacle, I think they're more careful about game release droughts.

This was my take, more a "It'll be a upgraded, smoother, better pokémon game, but if you think we're going open world and letting you traipse through 3-4 regions, you're wildly fucking mistaken" statement.
