What's your opinion /vp/?
Did you enjoy the types being one kind of move?
Did some of the moves that you thought would be special turn out to be physical or vise versa?

Sceptile got screwed over with Leaf Blade. Used to be special in Gen3 but the split made it crappy with his shitty attack stat

I kind of wish things like the elemental punches and fangs would be dual physical/special (like use the attacker's Attack, but add half of the target's Def and SpDef or something). Vacuum Wave should be reverse Psyshock. Hidden Power should function like Photon Geyser (maybe nerf its BP to 50 to prevent things like Scizor having a 90 BP physical Ice move).

They had good coverage and access to better moves.

Also earlier gen mechanics made pokemon going mixed or using their non main attack state for coverage much more viable.

Gengar had INSANE type coverage. Thunderbolt, Psychic, Giga Drain, Ice Punch, Explosion, and Fire Punch. He didn't need STAB.

Gengar Gen 3 for example went boltpunch+Giga drain aloghnsidea fuckton of support moves.Gen 4 it went for SB+Focus Blast because that too gave it Boltbeam coverage alongside TB and HP ICE but still never used poison moves. Only until Gen 6 where Poison smacked fairies it picked up a poison move but only for fairies. BallBlast still was used mostly for everything else.

Pokemon pre-gen 3 that had movesetissues back then still had it after the split (and some even worse).

The best thing to happen to franchise, clearly. Some Pokemon got fucked (thinking of all former Punch users with better Sp.Atk) but overall I think it gave more buffs than nerfs. On the other hand, Gen 4 brought the split AND the start of the powercreep, so they may be connected.
Someone need to explain me why Sacred Fire is physical tho

Interesting you mention Gengar when it's the perfect example of why the split was bad. It went from the most unpredicable pokemon of the meta to a boring one that just attacks but holding different items.

Probably because Ho-Oh's Attack is higher than its Sp. Atk, and they didn't want Sacred Fire to be bad. Especially a good thing they realized it since now Entei has it.

This. I say this often because that shit was so retarded.
Love, hate or feel neutral on Diamond and Pearl, the physical/special split made them among the most important games in the series if only for that.

The punches are still pretty awesome, just for different mons. Nidoking still appreciates them, and so does hitmonchan now. I think the physical special split made a lot of mons better, since a physical attacker is using underpowered special coverage moves and vice/versa.

The game boy was limited with coding space. It’s easier during damage calculation to run moves of the same type by the same attacking stat for all moves and Pokemon. At least I think that’s why it was like that for 3 gens

I can get that for RBY and GSC since they're on the same engine, but I really wonder what Gen 3's excuse is. Physical/Special split is very easy to implement in those games.

It makes no significant difference to calculation difficulty or speed and has been done in gen 1 by fan games. The GBA games don't even use half of the available space on the game cart. It was just a dumb design decision.
