They tried to hard to straight up reboot gen 1 with a lot of the designs and it just left us with a dex full of "recreations" that aren't all that interesting in the top half of the dex. Some gems in amongst it but I'd say still the weakest dex of any generation to date.

A lot of two-stage and three-stage lines, compared to Gens 6 and 7, yeah, can't argue there.

I've done three nuzlockes of Gen 5 and still have too many Unovan mons I'd love to use.

Agreed, its the best dex. Nothing has captured the wonder of having literally no idea whats gonna pop out of the grass since. Every single gen should be completely new pokemon until post game. Last two gens being packed full of Kanto shit when I've been playing with those Kanto mons for 20 years was fucking boring.

I agree with this. I hated the starters but I loved everything else. Plus it was the last time we really got a nice amount of new Pokemon. I feel like 6 and 8 don't have a lot going on, even if I like their designs.

I'll be honest, I hated the starters initially, but the past two gens shitstain of starter final evos has really made me appreciate Unova's starters. Samurott was already my favorite of the three to begin with (wish it had been given Fighting subtype), but I love shiny Emboar (movepool could be better) to the point where it redeemed the line for me. Serperior is also very nice.

THIS, so hard. This made Unova exciting, never knowing what I was going to run into first. I completely agree it would be better for post-game to have the national dex and being forced to use new mons only in the main campaign. We've all seen enough of Zubats, digletts and Geodudes for a lifetime. It was nice to find a Roggenrola or Drilbur for a change. Hell, even Woobat was a welcome change.

Gen 5 has most of my favourite Pokemon.

Not everything is perfect, but god damn every BW run ends up with me discovering something cool, or using mainly Gen 5 mons in BW2 despite the expanded dex.

Nah, about half are pretty awful in terms of design.

The starters have fine designs but they're just fucking boring otherwise, all of them were mistyped. Serperior should have been Grass/Poison or Grass/Dark, Emboar should have been Fire/Ground, and Samurott should have been Water/Fighting.

It had a lot of ugly shit but it also had some of my favorites. Pretty good overall but it suffered from forcing too many new designs and needlessly replacing old mons with shittier ones.
