The definition of evil is that you hold your own wants and needs most valuable, even at the expense of others. Which means they're only willing to sacrifice and work together for as long as they have a shared goal. They're an unstoppable force, because they have the Heroes usual strengths of unity and numbers but none of their moral restraints, BUT the moment they win and start deciding how to divvy up the loot/credit or what to do next, they start backstabbing and squabbling and it all falls apart, at which point the heroes take advantage of this weakened state to save the day.
