I used to think Gyms were boring in previous games, but now that Gen VII did away with them in favor of Trials, I miss the fuck out of them and hope they return in Gen VIII.

How does /vp/ feel? Do any of you want Gyms to come back?

Imagine an elite 4 based around battle types, weather, stats or color
Would allow them to keep a theme while giving them a team that isn't weak to one Pokemon

I rather have an elite 5 to shake things up.
no.1 is a speed-oriented trainer
no.2 is a defensive savant
no.3 is a status effects master
no.4 is an offensive sweeper
no.5 will have a generated team based on your performance on the previous four.
Defeating all of them allows you to "graduate" from the league. It makes much more sense story-wise as you don't need to speculate who beats who in order to become the champion.

If Gyms come back they should be more of a challenge - 6 pokemon teams are an absolute must. With there being nearly 700 odd of the fuckers now there really isn't an excuse to not.

Although I'd prefer it if GF either refined trials or came up with something new. The change was refreshing and really made it feel like a NEW pokemon game and not just the same rehashed formula.

I think a good solution would be some kind of middle ground between the two - maybe like 4 gyms and 4 trials could work.

Gyms were great, the only problem is that they became too easy, just like the games overall after BW2.

That would actually be sweet - earn those HM Slaves through trials and progress through gyms. They'd actually need to be a challenge though.

The trials were funny but I certainly wouldn't miss them. Gyms should come back, with more variety and ideally the later gyms would not be strictly type-based. They should also function like actual gyms, where you can always return to train/rebattle.

I don’t see why both can’t exist. Make the main league gym based with the region divided into sections like Alola was. Those sections can have Captains/Kahunas that you can battle after you do their trial.
