A lot of mixtures of chemicals don’t play well together due to intramolecular interactions, and fugacities allow you to measure how well/unwell a molecule plays well with others, so to speak. It comes up a lot in thermodynamics and is infamous among chem e undergrad students for being obtuse and unintuitive as fuck in addition to requiring very intense calculations with certain equations of state (which are models that tell you how a given system changes with changes in conditions).
