Chikorita sucks for the first 2 gyms
Grovyle is good for the first gym
Turtwig is good for the first gym and resists the 2nd
Snivy is Snivy
Chespin sucks for the first gym but is good for 2nd
Rowlet is good for the 2nd trial

So since gen 2, my bad then.
Chikorita absolutely sucks, and johto exp scaling and early distribution means you need to rely on your starter for quite a bit.

I remember Grovyle line being ridiculously bad compared to Torchic and Mudkip, which are some of the best starter lines ever in terms of strength.

Bulbasaur gets his special attack late, so you'll usually fall just short of getting Vine Whip if you're trying to train more than one Pokemon and don't know to powerlevel it. He's just stuck with tackle and leech seed otherwise.

For gen three, it's a tie between treeko and mudkip. Torchic is obvious the easiest choice, but treeko has an advantage in the rival battle on the bridge, and mudkip has an advantage in the third gym, assuming you evolved it.
