thats part of why SM sucks so much shit. All these new pokemon, and with the game that followed ORAS which made competitive play doable without hacks (other than having someonetrade you an injected ditto) and they downgrade every aspect of online play from breeding to actual menus for online play

the only technical improvement was raising IVs with bottlecaps but that whole goddamn plaza was so convoluted and pointlessly complex I never bothered learning how to play

you get new items, new secret bases and sometimes rare pokemon from these areas. It isn't post-game content because you can access during the run but at least it's optional content that gives you a feeling af actual exploration. SM literally forces down you a corridor and shuts off every way out of a certain zone except for the plot point despite having a map with a flagpole on the bottom screen all the time. It's an inexcusable design flaw.

I agree that back then it wasn't as linear and that you had exploration open to you. But the attitude of thinking that exploration actually made the game that much better is 100% fueled by nostalgia. The difference in quality isn't as big as it seems.

I'm not sure why anons deluded themselves into thinking there was gonna be a design overhaul mid-generation, and at the tail-end of this system's life cycle. At this point, enjoy the story, the characters you like, and not focus too hard on comparing it to older designs for now. A new generation and a new system life cycle is starting in a year or two, and we don't know what's coming. The franchise since the very beginning has gone through both improvements and steps back, so we can only wait and see now.

Having more stuff to do that you aren't forced to is always better than not having it. I'm not for the ebin open world bullshit but I wish the games could give me some stuff I can do on my own without the story railroading me all the way through.
As far as USUM goes, it's just idiotic that they didn't add new alola forms, considering they are a strong marketing point for nostalgia shekels and provide de facto new pokemon without actually addign anything to the Dex. Everything else looks decent.

pokemon is about collecting cool critters and other stuff like TMs and evolution stones and whatnot. A well designed pokemon game should be linear enough to never get lost and still have enough resources to progress comfortably but have the coolest shit kept in optional, more or less "secret" areas. They nailed the formula on the fucking head in the first games and now they're straining away from it for no reason.

Every Pokemon game is linear. Gen 3 and 4, and BW2 had the most amount of stuff to explore, but even that could be cleared quite quickly once you learned how to do it once. If anything, them getting rid of HMs probably just makes it go even faster now.

If anything, the new games have just streamlined that process. When you put it that way, you may as well just look at the older gens as like a campy B movie.

What I sad is that a "good" (IMHO) pokemon formula is linear (like every game has been) with optional and "secret" stuff that contains the coolest and rarest shit. I've never implied that gen 1 wasn't linear (although there is a slight hint of sequence breaking post-Erika).
XY and SM had almost none of that hidden stuff. Legendaries are literally handed to you (while in gen1 and 3 they were at the end of optional dungeons or required you to step off the rails), pseudos don't require you to explore some hidden cave or particular place back in the third or fourth town and are now conveniently placed in the late game areas with normal level scaling. I do admit that stuff like rare mons like the level 10 Salamence requiring you to chain SOS battles is a neat concept (only plagued by the stupid amounts of RNG and the overall grindy, tedious nature of SOS chaining) and the fact that the best TMs are still usually pretty hard to find means that they haven't completely forgot about the exploration side of the franchise.

You say this like GSC/HGSS didnt have another region and like Emerald/Platinum/HGSS didnt have battle frontiers or sidequests. Catching legendaries and battling champs has always supplemented the postgame, not just been a complete replacement.
