If it was DLC it would go down like this

Not really, no.

But third edition games are almost always better than the initial ones, Crystal/Emerald/Platinum/BW2 are pretty consistently heralded as the best of their respective generations, and typically provide us with even less new content than USUM are going to, so I don't know what people expected/don't get why they're so upset when the games are still likely better than vanilla SM.

Basically I feel like anyone who didn't expect this is a fucking child who entered the franchise with XY and has never seen a 3rd edition release before and is mad they spent $50 of their parents money on SM and now they can't convince mom to buy them USUM.

I can agree with the walking animations thing, but hopefully those were just created to future proof the models for the Switch/whatever else.
Honestly, if the pokemon models used those animations in battle in SM, the game probably would've lagged even worse than it already did.

Fair enough, didn't realize you were including ORAS themselves. No battle frontier was a major bummer but I really enjoyed those games as remakes of Ruby and Sapphire, even if the choice not to borrow more from Emerald hurt them significantly. The new megas were still nice, dexnav was great and the update to secret bases made leveling mons as easy as ever.

As for updating cartridges, it makes sense for them to add new mons/tutors/areas but changes to the storyline wouldn't really work for that as it would overlap the original story. If you don't care about the maingame as much I can see the issue though.
