Indie requires that they are both the developer and publisher of their titles - companies like Valve, Activision-Blizzard, and EA are indie.

Gamefreak does not publish their own titles - so they are not indie.

GameFreak doesn't own the IP for their games and they don't even self-publish. Their company is wholely dependent on Nintendo and The Pokemon Company. If Nintendo or The Pokemon Company severed ties, GameFreak would be bankrupt in a week.

The only way they could actually be less independent is if they were publicly traded and were dependent on shareholders as well.

Honestly, the smart thing for them to do is still "nothing at all".

Each release outsells the previous one. Why risk messing with something that's working? If any new release sells worse than the previous game, then you can guarantee Nintendo/TPC will be knocking on Gamefreak's door and asking how they can steer the ship right.

Until then, they're just going to be hands off and let the money printer keep printing.
