Gamefreak could have gone really ballsy and and made Sun and Moon into a kind of living document game that is updated continuously to comprise an initial release, 3rd version, and gen4 remake all in one, but didn't. The benefits USUM offers does not mean we should excuse its negatives.
I feel the same way, don't get me wrong, but I'm still going to judge it as a 3rd version on how it improves on the original, while keeping the DLC argument in mind. It's weird, Gamefreak seemed to realize that the 3rd edition is a dead concept back in gen 5. BW2 is a sequel, and ORAS is a remake/XY-prequel.
