All the rivals since Blue have been pretty shit. I mean Barry is probably the second best atleast. He's actually got an intimidating team and you battle him a shit ton. He's also very involved within the games events and his growth for a pokemon game character is good. But you can't get better than this.

Thanks for reminding me they're a thing. I was trying to figure out which rival was the most forgettable, and I didn't even remember Cheren and Bianca. Somehow my mind skipped over them and though Hugh was the only Gen 5 rival.

Serena and Calem are actually relevant to the plot just as much. The ending with Lysandre as well as the double battle against the two admins in the poke ball factory. He/She's actually more involved than the kids.

I play too much Pokemon. Anyway, Barry is actually on the forgettable side but he is a little endearing. Him being so disappointed with himself for losing to the admin at the Lake despite being trusted by the Professor to do the job when no else could was cute, especially when he comes out of nowhere at Spear Pillar not so much to help but for a rematch.

The number of fights is irrelevant. In every game he's in, he decides to challenge the gyms and take on the Elite 4 just because that's what you're doing and he wants to prove that he's just as good a trainer as you.

Shauna wanted to have fun or something. I don't think she had a specific goal.
Trevor wanted to complete the pokedex.
Tierno wanted to be a dance master.
Calem/Serena wanted to challenge the gyms and be champion. I think one of their parents had done it before, so they wanted to follow in their footsteps.

On the whole none of them actually did anything, besides Calem/Serena who was given a Mega Bracelet, which is kinda-sorta something.
