Multiplayer. You're probably too young to remember how this franchise was built on the premise of player interaction. Poor sad underage loser who had no friends and his first game was Emerald. Missed out on Pokemania and thinks the BF was the highlight of the franchise.

Why the fuck would I be buying these games for the multiplayer when Showdown has it for free, is faster, has more options, and works on my phone?

"Multiplayer" doesn't work as an excuse when there are people who use their 3DS on the fucking bus or train where you can't get a connection, unlike an LTE enabled phone. Poor sad underage loser who can't remember when these games actually had content that didn't didn't require other people.

Yes. The battle facilities, both the frontier and tower variants, suffer from a lack of any leeway. One AI getting lucky crits is enough to destroy your streak and kill 2-3 hours of progress. Being able to earn continues like Stadium would have gone a long way in making them playable without abusing the AI.

If the opponent AI gets lucky, you get good and try again later.
Hell, AI in the frontiers wasn't even as bad as it is in the current Tower clones.
One tip though: if it does get bad you just jew out on them and use extreme cancermons in order to make it, it's not that hard.

That one where you could only use one Pokemon was bullshit, too. It was so ridiculously easy to end up with a loss that was completely out of your control. At least the Sinnoh version got rid of the stupid point system and gave you a bit of control over which opponents you fought.

I'll agree to an extent.

Stadium and Stadium 2 were loads better than the Frontier, and were challenging without resorting to hax. Because the enemy teams didn't change, you could even formulate strategies on how to clear each Cup.

The Frontier's advantage was its variety of rulesets, even if they were a little gimmicky.

If you could register wifi tournaments into the Battle Tree, and save each tournament's rulesets (and even top-ranked trainers) so that you could challenge them at any time, I think that would go a long way towards implementing a Frontier-like system without Game Freak really having to expend any significant effort.

It's about execution and reward. It's why PWT is so highly regarded as well. When a player reaches this stage, it feels like they have accomplished something. The have earned their right to battle with only the best.
That's what Pokémon "post game" should be. Pokémon is not like any other game. Extra story shouldn't be the post game. It is not the reward players are looking for.
