Meanwhile in the previous game, Wally does all of that and more with little to no exposition and goes full tourneyfag, with a crack team of IV-bred and battle-hardened killers.
And remember, Wally began life as the meekest, most pathetic bedwetter you'll see, but even then he caught and trained a Ralts without being handheld by the PC.
