It’s really easy. Just tie a string around your 3DS and tie the other end onto the back of your pants or belt. Walk around as normal, and your Pokémon will follow behind you!

This isn't following Pokemon. There are some random pokemon in the overworld that you can interact with (turn, play peekaboo, etc.) And they follow you around for a really short space.

So far I found that dog and a pyukumuku.
You can't even capture them or do it to one of your captured Pokemon. It's shit.

This pretty much, the overworld even has mukrows flying for example and even your starter follows you at the beginning in a cutscene but Kukui goes "lol nope put it on the ball"

Exactly.

I honestly think it was really smart of them to implement this feature in this way. It’s a good anti-piracy technique, because who wants to drag a heavy laptop behind them when a 3DS is so much lighter?
