They're both mollusks. Cloyster is a bivalve and gastrodon is a gastropod (most likely a nudibranch)

Off the top of my head we have shellder line, octillary (don't know how remoraid fits in there), maybe clamperl (I think it's based more off of eel eggs than actually being a clam), shellos line, malamar line, and I think that's it. Makes sense to me that they chose to connect the two cause they're def more related to each other than they would be to any of the cephalopods

Even then, magcargo and sliggoo are both terrestrial. So it makes sense for gastrodon to be closely related to shellder since both are marine

Egg groups are probably more about just being able to have genetic material exchange possible with a partner, not about how closely related things are. If Poke-sperm can't meet Poke-egg, then they can't breed.
