Kanto route 15 had 10 trainers, with 28 pokemon between them. That's nearly an average of three pokemon per trainer. One trainer had four pokemon, and another had five pokemon.

That's a massive difference between modern pokemon's "five trainers per route, most having 1 or 2 pokemon"

and that's fine enough a design. Basically nobody is complainaing about that about Mario Odyssey.

I think the reason people find Totems more challenging is because they don't use all their options. With the abundance of free items thrown your way and things like Roto Powers and TMs super effective against the Totem Pokemon found in the same Trial they're really no more challenging than Gym Leaders. You literally get Brick Break in the Verdant Cavern's Trial and get Charge Beam in Brooklet Hill's Trial. You also get Flame Charge from Colress right before you get to Lush Jungle, Scald from Brooklet Hill and Rock Tomb in the area of the "most charming" seismic sister on Wela Volcano.

While i agree i find funny that all these greentexts all make fun of the "if you do this of course it's harder", yet if i tell people that the game expects you to trade Pokemon and say that you could trade in lv100 mons or other powerful things since the game lets you do that, people get mad at me.
